Achilleas Demetriades

Achilleas Demetriades declared his independent candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus in February 2022. Among other policies, he has put forward a proposal for the creation of a Truth Commission for Cyprus.

Since 1988, he has been practising as a lawyer at Lellos P Demetriades Law Office LLC, specializing in human rights and intellectual property. He successfully conducted the first individual application against Turkey before the European Court of Human Rights (Loizidou v Turkey – in relation to property) and the first individual application against Cyprus (Modinos v Cyprus – in relation to private life). He is a founding member of the NGO “Truth Now” and a former Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee of the Cyprus Bar Association. He was called to the English Bar and received a Master’s Degree in International Law from Georgetown University. He is also a European Patent Attorney and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
